Chartered Financial Planner
Helping my clients build the future they want and exploring possibilities with them is hugely satisfying. Aligning money with their complex lives is challenging but I‘ve always been strong with numbers, interested in investment and curious about people and their lives.
I have worked in financial services since graduating over 30 years ago and been a financial planner for over 20 years. The ‘art and science’ of financial planning provides stimulating work and fits me well. It’s technical but there is also a softer side, as engaging with people and understanding their lives and transitions needs empathy and creativity.
I try to help clients understand themselves better and what matters most in their lives before advising on financial matters. Proper planning takes time and effort but it’s so important to invest in the planning process for a good outcome. Without a joined up plan you’re flying blind with your money!
If you work with me I’ll be creative in how I assess the ‘challenge’ and in how I build a strategy that will be effective.
I love the ‘big picture’ planning for clients. Helping them to see what is possible and challenging their thinking which might be limiting sometimes. As a professional planner I like gaining insights into the lives of my clients, focusing more on achieving their desired outcome and less on the money.
Many people think of money in financial and mathematical ways but money can be highly emotional. I enjoy conversations that have clients reflect upon their life, what they want from it, and the actions they are willing to take towards progress. These conversations can be life changing.
Designing a proper strategy takes a lot of time and effort but I love the challenge of getting a client focused and organised to achieve things that really matter. It’s a real privilege helping clients build their future.
Ethical finance is an exciting area that’s become more and more important to clients in last few years. When I ask clients about their thoughts on this, more say yes now – they do care what they finance and certainly want to avoid nasty stuff. I enjoy opening that conversation up to help clients be clearer of their values to make better decisions.
I think Ethical Futures has so much potential with its ethical specialism and the broader shift in attitudes in how we all spend and live. Investment advisers can be a force for positive change and it’s such an exciting area.
When I’m not at work, my 2 boys keep me active with playing tennis, golf and occasional mountain biking. I live in East Lothian and have an ongoing project to upgrade our old townhouse in Haddington. This project will probably never end just like the Forth Bridge!

Client Services ManagerHaving spent almost 20 years working within the Financial Services Industry, it's good to work for advisers who genuinely live, breathe & display the ethical values they promote. With a friendly & relaxed environment, it’s a place I enjoy coming to on a daily basis and worth the 90 minute commute. Throughout my career I’ve tended to move around to obtain the necessary experience I felt I required and it’s nice to feel that I have access to everything I need to continue development and that I have possibly found my final place of employment...who could ask for more!
