At Ethical Futures we believe that you have the power to not only change your own life but change the world around you.
You might have already considered how your actions can have an impact. For example, you might donate your old clothes to charity shops, buy your fresh produce from local farm shops or avoid using single use plastic where possible.
But we believe that your money has power too. You might not have enough wealth to donate money to as many causes as you’d like to but that doesn’t mean that you don’t have power. Here are three ways in which you can manage your money sustainably and have an impact on the world.
Choose an ethical bank.
When you deposit money into the bank, it doesn’t just sit there until you take it out again. In order to fund things like mortgages and loans, the bank essentially borrows your money from you and invests it. So, when you choose who to open a current account with, consider where the bank invests. You might find that your first choice invests in a market that you object to. Last year we put together a guide to ethical banking to help you see the options that are available (click here). And remember, just because a bank is ethical, doesn’t mean that you can’t still get a good rate of interest on your savings. In fact, take a look at our Interest Rates Information Service to see your options (click here).
Choose to spend sustainably.
It’s not just about where you save your money, it’s also about where you spend it. It can be difficult to know who to trust. Just because it looks good on the surface, doesn’t mean it really is a good egg. Consider using sites such as Ethical Consumer or Good with Money to check out their guides to sustainable shopping options. Also, take a look for companies that work with bodies such as FairTrade and Rainforest Alliance. These bodies campaign for the rights of the workers who make the products and fight against climate issues such as deforestation.
Choose to invest sustainably.
When looking at your financial situation, it’s not enough to just consider your bank. If you want to achieve your financial goals, it is a good idea to get in touch with a financial planner. A good financial planner can sit down with you to map out your goals and align them to your ethical beliefs and mindset to create a plan for your future.
That’s where we come in! At Ethical Futures we ask our clients to let us help them make their money change their world. We believe that by only offering ethical investment options, we can help our clients to reach their financial goals whilst also helping make a difference to the world around them.
